Under 80,000 Pounds and Still Overweight: Axle Weights and the Bridge Formula

Your truck can scale under 80,000 lb gross and still be overweight. The federal axle limits, the bridge formula with a worked example, and how to pack a trailer so the pounds land where the law allows.

A truck can cross the scale under the 80,000 pound federal gross limit and still be overweight. Gross weight is only one of the checks. The other two, axle weight limits and the federal bridge formula, care about where the pounds sit along the trailer, and production freight is unusually good at failing them. Chain motors, cable trunks, and amp racks are dense, and they tend to get packed wherever load-out order wants them, not where the axles do.

The three weight limits every load has to pass

Federal law sets three limits on the Interstate system:

  • 20,000 pounds on any single axle
  • 34,000 pounds on a tandem (two axles spaced 40 to 96 inches apart)
  • 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight

In practice a standard five-axle combination splits that 80,000 as roughly 12,000 on the steer, 34,000 on the drives, and 34,000 on the trailer tandems. The steer axle is held to about 12,000 by front tire ratings even though the federal single-axle limit is higher.

Pass the gross check and fail an axle check and you are still overweight. That is the whole trap: the total can be legal while one axle group is not.

What is the federal bridge formula?

The bridge formula is the third check. Enacted in 1975, it limits the weight-to-length ratio of a vehicle so that a short, dense load cannot concentrate too many pounds over one span of a bridge. The FHWA publishes it as:

W = 500 x (LN / (N - 1) + 12N + 36)

W is the maximum weight allowed on any group of axles, L is the distance in feet between the outer axles of the group, and N is the number of axles in the group. The shorter the spacing, the less weight the group may carry. One notable exception: two consecutive tandems may carry 34,000 pounds each when the first and last axles of the group are at least 36 feet apart, which is what lets a standard five-axle rig gross the full 80,000.

A worked example

FHWA's own example makes the point. Take axles two through five of a rig, spaced 35 feet outer to outer, each carrying 17,000 pounds. Actual weight on the group: 68,000 pounds. The formula allows 65,500. That truck is 2,500 pounds over on the axle group while its gross weight is nowhere near 80,000. The fix is to shed load or spread the axles, and only one of those is possible at a scale house.

Why production loads fail axle checks

Tour freight is dense where normal freight is fluffy. A 53-foot dry van has 42,000 to 45,000 pounds of usable payload across 4,000 cubic feet, and most packs never get close to weighing out. But the pounds you do load are not spread evenly. Motor cases, cable trunks, transformer distros, and steel all want to come off the truck first, so they get packed at the nose. Everything at the nose loads the drive axles. A pack that is comfortably legal on paper can put a drive tandem over 34,000 while the back half of the trailer rides light.

Can you fix an overweight axle at the scale?

Sometimes. Sliding the trailer tandems shifts weight between the drive axles and the trailer axles, about 250 pounds per hole, and the rule of thumb is to slide toward the problem. But sliding only redistributes weight between axle groups. It does not change gross weight, and it cannot rescue a pack whose heavy cases are all stacked over one end. If the imbalance is big enough, the real fix is restacking the truck in a scale house parking lot, which is nobody's favorite day sheet entry.

How to plan axle weight before the truck moves

The cheap fix happens in the load plan, not at the scale:

  1. Put a real weight on every case. Guessing at trunk weights is how noses get heavy.
  2. Spread the dense cases along the length of the trailer, not just wherever load-out order wants them.
  3. Watch the running total as you pack, so weight problems show up on a screen instead of on a CAT scale ticket.
