How Many Road Cases Would It Take to Fill an IMAX Screen?
An IMAX screen is 79 feet wide and 59 feet tall. We ran the case math: 483 half pack trunks, 1,798 Pelican 1650s, or 3,354 carry-on 1510s to fill it, and about four 53-foot trailers to haul the wall. Every example is a live Truck Packer pack you can open.


Touring people measure everything in trucks. So when the question came up in the shop this week, we had to run it: how many road cases would it take to build a wall the size of an IMAX screen?
Not fill the theater. Just the screen itself, face on, a solid wall of cases stacked the way they would actually ride in a truck. It turns out the answer is a pretty good tour of the case sizes most of us push up a ramp every night. And because saying a number is one thing and seeing it is another, we built every example in this post as a real, live pack in Truck Packer that you can open and orbit.
First, the screen
There is no single IMAX size, but the classic IMAX 15/70 format uses screens around 18 by 24 meters, which is 59 feet tall by 79 feet wide. That is roughly 4,660 square feet of screen, or in the units that matter here, a wall 948 inches wide and 708 inches tall.
Ground rules for the math: exterior dimensions, cases sitting in their normal stacking orientation, no clever rotating to shave the remainder. This is a loading dock, not Tetris.
Half pack trunks: 483
The half pack is the workhorse. A standard trunk runs 45 by 30 inches with a 30 inch height, casters included. Face on, that gives you 21 trunks across the width and 23 rows up the height.

We built that exact wall: open the 483-trunk IMAX wall in Truck Packer, all 21 columns and 23 rows, with a 53-foot trailer parked in front of it for scale. The trailer barely reaches the fifth row.
Here is the part that should make your production manager wince. That same trunk weighs about 130 pounds empty, so the wall comes to 62,790 pounds before you put a single cable in it. A 53-foot dry van tops out around 42,000 to 45,000 pounds of payload, which means the empty wall already outweighs a full legal truckload. Weight caps your load before the walls do, as we covered yesterday.
Pelican 1650s: 1,798
Drop down to the big Pelican, the one your backline tech guards with their life. The 1650 measures 32.5 by 20.5 inches and 11.31 inches tall. Stacked flat, that is 29 across and 62 rows high.

Pelican 1510s: 3,354
The carry-on. The 1510 is 22 by 14 inches and 9 inches tall, sized to slide into an overhead bin. Face on: 43 across, 78 rows.
3,354 Pelican 1510s, and at about 16 pounds each that is nearly 27 tons of empty carry-on cases. Good luck at the gate.
Papering the whole screen in Pelicans makes for a silly wall, so for these two we built the version that shows the scale: one full-height column of each case, side by side. A stack of 23 half packs, a stack of 62 Pelican 1650s, and a stack of 78 1510s, all reaching the same 59 foot line, with the 53-footer parked alongside looking very small.
How many trucks is the wall?
Back to the unit that actually matters. Using the 636 by 100 inch interior of a 53-foot dry van, half packs load three across, fourteen deep, and three high: 126 trunks per trailer. The 483-trunk IMAX wall is therefore about four 53-foot trailers. The biggest standard movie screen on earth is a four-truck day.
That pack exists too: see all 483 trunks loaded across four trailers, 126 per truck with the 105-trunk remainder riding in truck four, load bar gaps and all.
And if you want the heavyweight version: the largest IMAX screen in the world, at the Traumpalast in Leonberg, Germany, measures 38 by 22 meters, or 125 by 72 feet. That wall takes 924 half packs, call it eight trucks.
Why the half pack numbers come out so clean
Notice how little waste there was in the half pack math. That is not luck. The 45 by 30 inch footprint is the touring standard precisely because it divides a trailer so well: two trunks lengthwise or three across the width both land neatly inside a 100 inch interior, and everything from quarter packs to full workboxes is a multiple of the same grid. Your truck pack is modular for the same reason this screen math is easy.
