About these numbers

Rail carries freight in volumes road cannot touch, and a single boxcar holds roughly three to four truckloads. North American boxcars are described by plate designation, a clearance diagram that tells a railroad which routes a car can travel without fouling a bridge or tunnel. A Plate C 50 ft boxcar is the general-service standard at about 606 in of inside length, 114 in wide, and 132 in tall, with a 200,000 lb load limit. A Plate F 60 ft high-cube adds two feet of interior height and ten feet of length, and is the car of choice for high-volume, low-density freight such as paper, appliances, and automotive parts.
